OUR  HOUNDS

WHAT'S A HARE HOUND?  I guess by some people's definition it is a hound who runs a hare fast, wild and recklessly. And usually the inference points toward a dog who readilly competes in the Large Pack format.
WHAT'S A COTTONTAIL HOUND?  Some would say that it's a dog that is slow and potters, barks too much in one place and doesn't hunt for beans and lacks the toughness to run very long and can't be hunted successfully.

OUR HOUNDS  don't fit either of those two descriptions just stated.  Because of the geographical area that I live in, my training/hunting activities with the hounds are done almost exclusively on the hare, outsiders can easily get the impression that our hounds are rough, wild and unsteady. Other people might consider our hounds unworthy 'cause we compete in SPO trials exclusively. However we do our very best to purge ourselves away from either of the stereotypes. We consider our hounds to be BEAGLES, pure and simple. Bred and raised to perform well on cottontail as well as hare in all types of conditions for hunting solo or in a pack.

OUR PHILOSOPHY  is simple.; We breed for and train for the kind of hound who will; FIND IT'S OWN GAME, PERSUE IT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME WITHOUT A LOSS, DO IT ALL DAY, AND DO IT AGAIN TOMORROW. (on cottontail or hare)

THE NAME OF THE GAME  is to find a rabbit/hare and chase it until it ends up running into a hunters bullet, no matter how long that might take. THE BEAGLE is primarily a hunting dog and we'll do our best to keep it just that.

We consider a beagle a hunting dog over everything else and field trials are just a game to be enjoyed for what it is. But the bottom line is, a beagle must be fully qualified to get the job done, day in and day out in the field after a lot of trips in the woods under the gun. And it's a fact that most people who own Beagles don't hunt all that much and really just talk about it. The over competetive, reckless, over running, swinging, lazy, huntless and unmanageable beagle SHOULD NEVER BE A FIELD CHAMPION but many are.

Here's a view of our kennel where the hounds are well kept and runs are easily cleaned. We're pleased with the design of our facility and how it can be managed with little effort. The hounds are fed from inside the barn and this makes it a great convenience during the winter months when we often have a lot of snow and high winds. We have running water available in the barn to hose down the runs and for the feeding the dogs. We can accommodate up to 24 hounds in this set up but rarely keep more than 12 dogs including pups.

LEB CITY TIMOTHY    (Whelped December 12, 1995)    Timmy is about 13 1/2 inches tall and built on the rugged side with a deep chest and muscular physique. He's a mild mannered friendly dog with excellent handling skills. He's always been a hound that hunts with you instead you with him. A good searcher and a gutty tireless hunter of medium speed that runs a solid rabbit under most conditions with a never give up attitude. He has a chop mouth used liberally and will oft times give tongue when harking to a running pack. He's an alert eager dog always in the group getting his share of the work done, if not more. AND HE DOESN'T RUN DEER. "The Toolman" is a pleasure to hunt with as he contributes a lot to the success of the pack and gets a lot done. Pretty good snowdog too. There are very few hunts we've made over the years where Tim was not a part of the pack. His handling ability, the fact that he will absolutely NOT run a deer and gets A LOT done in a hunt situation has afforded us to shoot over a thousand hare over this dog. A true hunting companion that has earned the title here of HUNTING DOG.

LEB CITY RUTH   whelped 12-27-01      Ruth, is a 13 inch female with beautiful black and tan silky fur like her Mom "Candy", and her Dad "Bruno". She's a hard searching, self hunting hound, knows no quit and runs at about a medium speed. RUTH has a great nose and exclaims the find and conducts the chase with a high pitched chop mouth used liberally and with control. She spent many hours running cottontails at Tony's place in New York a few years ago. She's matured considerably from this training and has learned to handle the tough running creepers in the heat and would stay afield running all day alone until picked up. At home she earns her keep running snowshoe hare and is heavily gunned. Over the years this dog has proven to be one of the best hounds I've had and can run solo as good if not better than any hound around here under tough scenting conditions. She suffered a severe back injury about two years ago and that set her back as far as field competitions go, but still can win in any trial entered especially if conditions don't favor fast running. She has a great snow nose and accounts for a high percentage of game started even on some of the low temperatures often found in this State.

AT THE TRIALS IN 2004....RUTH ran in New York at the prestigious CAYUGA LAKE SPO trial in July and PLACED 3RD in a class of 55. On August 15th we traveled to Massachusettes where she was entered at the NEW ENGLAND beagle club's SPO trial and PLACED 1ST in a class of 32.

LEB CITY ON HIGH HANNAH  Whelped 03-31-05      HANNAH at this writting just turned two years of age and has developed beyond our expectations. She has been trained solo mostly during this past spring and summer and got some brace running with her litter sister "Nynah" owned by my good friend Neal Smith. During the 2006/2007 hunting season she performed especially well considering this being her first exposure to running on snow. By seasons end she ran on all kind of different snow textures and ran with great authority consistently. She came in heat in February and was bred to Neals dog "CHASE" on 2-28-2007. On March 26th, she was hunted on a difficult granular crust and accounted for some good runs in a tough hunt situation. On Saturday March 31st she was entered in her first trial at KENNEBEC in a class of 17 big bitches. This was an SP trial whereas the judges had to take a winners pack down to a brace. She performed well throughout the event and on through the brace portion of the competition on a tough granular frozen snow. Hannah won the class in a dominant fashion against a number of near field champions. On April 21, 2007 she was taken a trial to run on cottontail at Thornton in Rhode Island while heavy with pups and placed 3rd after a long session in the field looking for game in the winners pack. She had a good shot to win this class but got tired in the latter stages of the event. A week and a half after the Thornton trial she whelped 8 nice puppies and has raised all 8 puppies.
HANNAH has a heavy coarse squall mouth used liberally with a big nose that allows her to run with great authority even under tough conditions. She is a great hunter too and keeps very busy searching for game in a close easy to handle fashion and does not run trash. She's pleasure to hunt over being very easy to handle as she responds well to voice command.

LEB CITY SAINT ROSE OF SHARON    Sharon was whelped 02-16-2003      We recently added Sharon to our pack a short while ago and being a Mr Bill bred hound and out of dogs we hada few years ago, we're anxious to train her into hunting condition this summer. Sharon is a border line 13 inch hound and is a hard hunting, with a close running style and with a squall mouth. She handles quite well, packs up good and knows no quit.
